The chromium content of ferritic stainless steel (400 series) is 15%~30%, this kind of steel generally does not contain nickel, and sometimes contains a small amount of Mo, Ti, Nb and others elements,
which has the characteristics of large thermal conductivity, small expansion coefficient, good oxidation resistance and excellent anti-stress corrosion, etc, used in the manufacture of air, water vapor and water resistant and oxidizing acid corrosion of components. Ferritic stainless steel not only has low price and stable performance, but also has many unique features and advantages. It has been proved that ferritic stainless steel is an excellent substitute material in many applications that had previously been considered to be only of austenitic stainless steel (300 series). Ferritic stainless steel no contains nickel, the main element is chromium (＞10%) and iron, chromium is the element with special corrosion resistance of stainless steel, its price is relatively stable.
Chromium ferritic stainless steel according to the chromium content can be divided into three types：low, medium and high, according to the purity of steel, especially the carbon, nitrogen impurity content and can be divided into common ferritic stainless steel and ultra pure ferritic stainless steel. Common ferritic stainless steel with low temperature and room temperature brittleness, notch sensitivity and high tendency of intercrystalline corrosion, poor weldability were weakness, although this kind of steel development earlier, but has been very limited in industrial application. These defects of ordinary ferritic stainless steel are related to the purity of steel, especially the high content of carbon and nitrogen in steel.
Ferritic stainless steel pipe includes low, medium and high chromium content. Low chromium ferritic stainless steel, chromium containing approximately 11% ~ 14%, as chinese 00Cr12 and 0Cr13Al, as american AISI400, 405, and 406MF-2. This kind of steel has good toughness, plasticity, cold deformation and weldability. Since steel contains a certain amount of chromium and aluminum, it has good oxidation resistance and non-rust. 405 used as oil refining tower, slot lining, steam turbine blade, high temperature sulfur corrosion device, etc. 400 for household and office supplies, etc. 409 used in automobile exhaust, silencing system device, cold and warm water pipe, etc.
Medium chromium ferritic stainless steel with a chromium content of 14% ~ 19%, such as chinese 1Cr17 and 1Cr17Mo, as american AISI429, 430, 433, 434, 435, 436, 439. This kind of steel has good corrosion resistance. Its working hardening coefficient is small (n≈2), with good deep drawing performance, but poor ductility. 430 is used for building decoration, car decoration, kitchen equipment, gas burner, and nitric acid industrial equipment, etc. 434 is used for exterior decoration of cars and buildings. 439 is used as a hose for gas water heater, coal and gas pipeline.
High chromium ferritic stainless steel has a chromium content of 19% ~ 30%, such as Cr18Si2 and Cr25 in China, AISI442, 443 and 446 in the United States. This kind of steel has good oxidation resistance. 442 is used in atmospheric intermittent, the limit temperature is 1035 ℃, the highest temperature of continuous use is 980 ℃. And 446 has better antioxidant properties.
